Which IT job is the best?

I am an IT engineer over 10 years now, and many younger people are asking me which job in IT is the best. I think that I have some good knowledge about that and I want to write few more words about it!

Programmer

If you can code and you like it then you should think about becoming a programmer. Of course it is not that easy and you have to put a lot of work to learn to code well, but there are many good points of choosing this path:

• It is very easy to find a job as a programmer (if you are a good one)
• You can start your own small company
• There are many jobs for freelancers, so you can work from other parts of world

The question is which language is the best. In my opinion, learn everything you can about one of them, and then it will be easy for you to switch to other language.  For now the most popular languages are:

• Java
• C++
• Php
• Ruby
• Others

As I said, learn one of them and then it will be easy to code in other language.

IT administrator

If you do not like to code, then thin about becoming an IT administrator. In that case you should have a good knowledge about networks and hardware. You should specialize on some operating system, but it is good to know well both Windows Server and Linux systems.

You can also mix this things. My friends specialize in jboss fedora and they are very happy with their job.

As you can see, there are some options out there. You have to put some work to become an expert but it is worth it.

Which operating system is the best?

That is a common question I receive from my friends and clients. First, let’s check some dominating trends:

In USA the most popular OS (shortcut from Operating system) is of course Mac OS. There are many different versions of that system, but because Apple as a producer is dominating, therefore people are using Apple’s systems.

In Europe situation is different. Windows system are dominating and there is the best chance that you will see PC or notebook with that OS. In Western Europe there is more Mac users, because people in countries like France, Germany or UK are richer and they can afford to buy Apple products. In Easter Europe people are quite poor so the go with Windows OS – most of the times illegal versions.

Which system is better? I like Mac OS more because it is nicer and easier to use. You can also found many good programs for Macs. On the other hand Windows OS are not so bad. Ok, Vista was terrible, but current Windows 7 has some good functions you can use.

If you have money and can afford to buy Mac, I recommend it. If you want to spend less money and buy laptop from other producer, just buy one with Windows 7 and it should be fine too.
